Day 8: Darwinian Evolution

Today we will look at Charles Darwin’s formative trip around the world and his two best known books, Origin of Species and The Descent of Man.  As we work through Darwin’s theories, think about his relationship to the natural theology of the prior two hundred years.  I also want you to focus on how Darwin built his reputation and his texts in light of the reception of Chamber’s Vestiges.  This episode is informative for issues on the relationship between science and religion and the professionalization of science.


  • Finish reading chapters 7-14 and 21 of H.G. Wells’s Island of Doctor Moreau
  • Also read the Doctor Moreau group’s blog when they post it and leave a comment on one question that you had about the book, the author, the science, or its relevance to our class
